British Museum proving popular among London tourists

There is no shortage of accommodation available to those want to stay in London, whether for business or pleasure. Those who want to experience complete luxury can book themselves into 5 star hotels in London. Meanwhile, during their stay in the capital, individuals have plenty to keep them entertained.

It seems as though many people are heading to the British Museum while they are in the city. The tourist attraction had its best spring ever this year in terms of visitor numbers. Figures for May were up 42 per cent compared with 2012, the Guardian reports.

It is thought that the success of the museum over recent months has been fuelled by the blockbuster Pompeii and Herculaneum show, which is set to become the third most popular exhibition since the museum opened in 1753.

The show has attracted double the projected number and by the time it closes on September 29th, it is expected to be one of the institution’s most visited exhibitions, after Tutankhamun in 1972 and the Chinese terracotta warriors in 2007.  Also proving popular is the Ice Age Art exhibition, which outstripped expectations in visitor numbers by 130 per cent.

Meanwhile, the British Museum was the UK’s most popular visitor attraction for the sixth year in a row in 2012, with a total of 5.6 million individuals entering its doors.

One in ten overseas visitors to the UK and one in four visitors to the capital, including some of those who opt to stay in luxury hotels in London, head to the museum. According to its chairman Niall FitzGerald, “the economic impact of the museum is not in question”. He added that even more important is its “creative and intellectual contribution”.

Next spring, the British Museum will open its new £135 million exhibition and conservation centre with a show dedicated to the Vikings. Commenting on this, museum director Neil MacGregor suggested it could change the way people think about our history. He noted that at one point, England was at the centre of a Viking network that spread from the Black Sea to Dublin.

Meanwhile, talking about the international nature of the museum, Mr FitzGerald said: “We may be called the British Museum, but we think of ourselves as of the world and for the world.”

Of course, as well as the array of museums available to those who stay in 5 star hotels in London, there are plenty of other attractions for them to discover. Food lovers can sample the city’s array of cuisine, which ranges from rustic street meals to fine dining. Also, many visitors to the capital enjoy strolling around the many parks and taking in views  of iconic landmarks like the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, Tower Bridge and Buckingham Palace.

Those with a penchant for theatre can also head to the West End while they are in the capital. Regardless of the time of year they travel to London, there should be a variety of shows for them to choose from. There is also plenty of shopping for anyone who fancies indulging in some retail therapy.
