Deep Sea Fishing Top Tips For Your Turks & Caicos Islands Holiday

When you go on holiday, you want to explore everything the entire area has to offer, and that includes the sea! One of the best activities to be enjoyed in the sea is deep sea fishing, where the active sport is not only supremely fun and entertaining, but it also rewards you (hopefully!) with some pretty impressive catch at the end of the day as well.

Making sure you have an enjoyable trip will involve a little planning, as with any trip the more planning you do, the more you can relax when you’re there.

The Fish

There are going to be so many different types of fish for you to catch when you enjoy deep sea fishing Turks and Caicos islands. Marlin, sharks, tuna – it’s real big game fishing territory. When you look to opt for a charter company to take you on a trip, you will see that they offer three main types of deep sea fishing which are offshore, bottom fishing and trolling.

Bottom Fishing –

This involved dropping the end of the fishing line onto the bottom of the sea floor, or close to it. This is done to catch the type of fish that tend to stay at this level of the water, in fact some areas do have artificial reefs which have been made to attract certain fish. The reefs in the Turks and Caicos are not artificial, this is because it is one of the rare tourist areas where the marine life and habitat has not been spoilt by tourism, which makes for ample deep sea fishing opportunities.

Trolling –

Trolling is the type of deep sea fishing enjoyed by adrenaline junkies. It involves a lot of skill, but you needn’t worry if you’re fairly new to deep sea fishing as your charter company will have ample experience to help you learn how to enjoy this exciting activity. It is done by ensuring the bait is on the surface of the water, as the line is moving so the boat continues at a slow speed. The fish will have to chase the bait which then makes them more likely to twist and turn when they are caught on the hook, resulting in an exciting fight between angler and animal in order to get the fish on board.

Offshore Fishing –

Offshore fishing is the type of deep sea fishing enjoyed by anglers who love a large catch. Although a lot of the fish caught are edible, they tend to be more suited to trophy mounting because of their size. This is a really exciting type of fishing that is not for the faint hearted. It’s particularly great because those observing, waiting their turn get a really fun show to watch – so the trip is never boring for anyone on board.

Equipment

Charter companies will supply you with all the equipment you need in most cases. However, it is important to ask them if you do need to bring anything to ensure you don’t turn up without something you need for a good days deep sea fishing. At the very least you will need things like sun cream, suitable clothing and a cooler box to keep your catch in.

Preparing Properly

You will have a great time regardless of whether or not you catch anything, that is definitely something you can expect no matter what. However, it is still important to prepare for different eventualities just in case. Remember this will be an all day long trip, so it pays to be prepared so you’re as comfortable as possible for the duration of the experience.

First and foremost – don’t assume you won’t get seasick. Some people who have never been seasick before can unexpectedly be affected by a boat trip. Take fast acting anti-seasickness tablets on board with you, or take them a certain amount of time before you go if the manufacturer recommends it – it’s better to be safe than sorry. You should also ask about the food and drink available on board. Some vessels will provide lunch, others won’t so ask if they do and check they can cater for any special dietary requirements. It’s always worth taking a few extra snacks just in case you get peckish. You should also ensure you take any medication you have to take and don’t fail to mention any illnesses the captain needs to be aware of, in case of an emergency.

Other items you should take are –

  • Warm clothes – the temperature is always colder at sea so take extra layers in case you get chilly
  • Pain killers
  • Sun cream
  • Soft bottom shoes that have some grip on them
  • Money
  • A sun hat
  • A cooler

Remember, if you’re unsure about anything don’t be afraid to ask the charter company any questions – they are extremely experienced and will be more than happy to help you, they want you to have an amazing time!
